Out today (September 5, 2024) in early access, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 by Saber Interactive aims to deliver a deep action-experience set within one of the most popular sci-fi universes ever created. This is why this game may be worth a spot in your library.

Immersive Combat and Stunning Visuals
Arguably the most exciting feature in Space Marine 2 is its incredibly brutal combat. You play as Demetrian Titus, an Ultramarine with years of battle experience who is charged to save humanity from the Tyranids. Combat is both third-person shooting and melee, but the game’s mix-and-match approach to form lends it a great deal of satisfaction. You are playing as a Space Marine who will be using powerful weapons such Chainsword and Bolters, killing the xenos in brutal cinematic finishing moves which refill your armor. It’s a level of depth in an action game rarely seen this side of strategic planning mingling with chaotic violence.

A Streamlined Yet Epic Campaign
The campaign is another reason to dive in jump in. It goes for about 10 hours, balancing bombastic action sequences with slower, more tense moments. Not that the campaign, as linear and predictable though it may be structurally, is at all dull. This is paired with the interesting level design, pacing and a variety of scenarios- from intense monster fights in tight corridors to grand fields of battle – that keep things feeling new. There is also co-op, which adds a new layer of intrigue, whether teaming up with AI or friends.
But the story can be dense, not a plot line that is easy to follow if you are new to or lightly versed in Warhammer 40K lore. No prior familiarity is essential, but its extensive links to previous games might feel overwhelming to newcomers.

Multiplayer Offers Longevity
Space Marine 2 also brings with it a slew of robust multiplayer modes for those who want more than just the campaign. Operations mode allows up to three players to take on PvE missions, while Eternal War offers PvP combat for up to 12 players. Cross-play means you can befriend the entire player-base regardless of platform. Character customization is vast, allowing you to tailor your Space Marine’s appearance and play style to your preference.
What You Should Consider
While Space Marine 2 is a game with strong foundations, it does have some flaws. The action is exhilarating but can become repetitive after long sessions. Although the developers keep things interesting with new weapons and enemy types, the basic mechanics can get boring.
The narrative being too shallow could dissuade those seeking a little more story involvement or emotional engagement. Other fans might also see the 10-hour campaign as brief but should find replay value in multiplayer modes.
